YouTube Highlight of the Day: Loved, It’s Over Now

*Edit: Thanks to blue1004, I found out that the music video I posted earlier was the Korean version and that the English subtitles were completely off, because they were actually from the English version of the song. I’ve reposted the video and included the translations in this post, subbed by the wonderful blue. I’ve also added the English version clip to this post. Thanks, blue!*

Hot dayum.

*jaw drops to the floor*

One of the best music videos ever made? Heck. yes. At least for me it was. I watched this several times before taking a crack at understanding the underlining thematic messages of this MV. I didn’t know whether to go by the title, “It Ended Amidst Love,” which sounds more grammatically correct, or this one, which is the direct translation that was posted on the original MV.

Korean version with translations by blue below:

It’s getting farther away, your heart is leaving
It’s getting smaller, my image (compared to) you
It’s cooling, our passionate story
When you’re still the only one for me

I try laughing. I try calling your name,
In case you’d come back.
Without having cried, deceiving myself
I call out your name once again.

Chorus:
Because it ended in the midst of love
Because you left me so easily
Our many memories, the many promises we made
They all ended with your few words.
In the warm sunshine, I alone am frozen now.
With the cold expression
And your back quickly turning from me
We ended.

I try laughing. I try calling your name,
In case you’d come back.
Without having cried, deceiving myself
I call out your name once again.

Repeat chorus

I just can’t believe it,
As I’ve always done,
I’ll keep hoping you’d come back.
How could I erase you?

Amongst the many people
I alone am by myself
Can’t even walk one step forward
Absentmindedly, I only look at that place you left
If we can go back to how we used to be
I’ll stop here at this place.
Although I’m a little scared,
Although it would be foolish
Even if I have to do this,
I’ll wait for you.

English version:

The MV portrays a man, specifically a popular celebrity, who is suffering from heartbreak. We don’t know exactly why his girlfriend left him, but from the pieces of scenes we see of them together, it seems like the girlfriend left him because he hid himself behind a facade. But it didn’t used to be this way. Somewhere along the way, he couldn’t separate himself from who he pretended to be. The person he only showed to the world somehow entered his private life, consuming him.

The mask motif, as well as the black vs. white and the angels vs. demons was well portrayed, becoming a highlight of this music video for me. I love how, in this MV, the mask is both visible and invisible. It’s actually tangible when it’s not worn, yet intangible when it is, almost as if it chooses to reveal itself when it pleases. At first, Brian (or his character) seems to be in control of the mask. He’s solely responsible in deciding when to put it on and when to takes it off, wherever he wants to.

Around his girlfriend, however, he hides his mask until she finds it one day. He overreacts, or perhaps it’s that other Self that becomes violent. Either way, the girl leaves him.

He acts nonchalant, but in reality, is breaking on the inside. Still, he literally cradles his mask closer, reluctant to let it go. He continues to party, wearing that mask so that he’s more outgoing and self-confident around the ladies at the nightclub. At home, he’s plagued by dreams and one day dreams of his ex-girlfriend. He finds that the mask is glued to his face and that he can’t take it off, even at will. He tries all kinds of methods to take the mask off, but it sticks to his face like super glue. Now when he actually wants it off, he can’t take it off. Oh the irony.

The final moments we see is of him ripping the mask off. As a consequence, blood drips down his face and he unleashes black wings. Ooooh.

Wasn’t that awesome? I’m sure there’s more than one perspective and more than one correct answer. I loved this because anyone can relate to this story, regardless of whether you’re a celebrity or not. We don’t have to be a famous star to understand the implications this MV presents. We’re all guilty of it at some point in our lives-wearing a mask and hiding our true selves behind this happy-go-lucky demeanor when we’re actually feeling downright crappy in reality. We think we’re taking on the world when in fact, we’re battling ourselves. I say it’s the battle of being true to yourself (aka awareness) vs. conforming to society’s standards (aka unconsciousness). Guess Mr. Freud here would say that more specifically, it’s the ego vs. the superego. Fine. Whatever, Mr. Smartypants.

  1. Ooh, great MV. As for the Eng subs, it did not match the Korean lyrics AT ALL. I was so confused until I found out that he released an English version of the song. The Eng subs they used is the exact lyrics to the english version. Unfortunately, the Korean lyrics and the English lyrics are completely different.

    • I quickly translated the lyrics. (Umm, is it me, or is he talking about suicide at the end?) Anyway, here it is:

It’s getting farther away, your heart is leaving
It’s getting smaller, my image (compared to) you
      It’s cooling, our passionate story
When you’re still the only one for me

I try laughing. I try calling your name,
      In case you’d come back.
      Without having cried, deceiving myself
I call out your name once again.

Because it ended in the midst of love
Because you left me so easily
Our many memories, the many promises we made
They all ended with your few words.
In the warm sunshine, I alone am frozen now.
      With the cold expression

      We ended.

      • Whoaaaaaaa, thanks blue!

Oh, so the English & Korean version are entirely different? I’ll take off the video from above then and show both versions then. Thanks for clearing things up!

      • He *might* be talking about suicide too. I wish I could understand the Korean lyrics because based on your English translations, I’m not sure. Lol. Maybe I’ll get back to you later today after I’ve rewatched this more. (And after I get back from Real Life duties.)

  2. Ooh nice video. I like how it was portrayed and stuff. Dunno about the song because it didn’t leave much of an impression as I was first listening to it without watching the video. But after reading your comments on it, I did. Hehe. I love symbolism! ^-^
