Romance Town: Open Thread and Poll

When I started watching Romance Town, which led to writing about the drama on this blog, I never expected DBJ’s readership to subtly increase. The numbers aren’t vastly significant, but as a dodo that’s used to a small handful of dedicated readers, the increase in viewers and comments was a little shocking, to say the least. Out of all the May dramas, Romance Town is one that perhaps most people are choosing not to continue, perhaps because the story is slowing down, or due to the fact that they’re just too busy to watch it. As for me, no matter how hectic my schedule is –and believe me, this week is going to be my final stretch before summer– I still continue to watch and enjoy it immensely.

Now that we’re halfway through Romance Town, I want to know what y’all think about it, and whether you’re still watching it or not. I know there’s a lot more of you out there lurking around, so I created a small poll consisting of seven questions. Yay! However, you can only vote once, so more people can join in on the fun and the results are less skewed.

Since it’s my first time making one, I have no idea as to how it’ll turn out. But because I really, really feel like procrastinating from what I should be doing right now, I’m crossing my fingers that everything shows up. For those of you who want to, you’re all free to share your answers and/or to talk about the drama in the comments section below! You may also spread the word about this poll to other Romance Towners as well! Happy polling and commenting, folks!

  1. Alright, I’ll be the first to share, I guess?

“Why did you check out Romance Town?”
Jung Kyeo Woon, Jung Kyeo Woon, Jung Kyeo Woon! What more can I say? He’s MIIIIINNN–Whoops, I meant um, I watched it for him.

Did any of you expect anything else? XD

What are your current feelings about it?
It’s almost a perfect match made in heaven, but is just a hair shy from becoming my drama crack.

I almost put that I was in love, but the middle episodes had me chewing my nails so I chose this answer instead.

Which OTP (one true pairing) are you rooting for?
Gun Woo and Soon Geum. They should start making babies.

If I had to be nitpicky, the one thing that bothers me the most is
The editing. Hello, is a monkey editing this drama?

When I’m not watching Romance Town
I’m constantly checking for updates and spoilers on forums and blogs.

My favorite aspect about Romance Town is
The characters that make me laugh and squeal with glee.

Should there be more posts related to Romance Town in the last few weeks ahead?
Instead of more posts on Romance Town, how about finishing up your commentary series because you’re behind?

Haha. I have no idea why I answered this one, because it was more of a question for the rest of you, but yes, I should get on the commentary series fairly soon….

  2. I’m new to DBJ. I found you through another place that recaps and I like your style of writing and humor so I stick with you (plus, always good to have different opinions on the shows I like).

I have to say, Romance Town has me feeling seriously confused. I’m not sure what I’m missing that others seem to be getting. I started to watch it because … okay well Jung Gyu Woon is hotness. The first episode he had me smiling as did Sung Yu Ri. I’m also not sure where it went wrong after that. It’s almost as (for me!) the story just stops there and picks up randomly in other spots without really telling anything then going back to pick up on the cute couple I like. I’m not sure if I’m making a whole lot of sense because A) confusing enough of a drama for me and B) I’m so fricken tired because I’m trying to catch up on all the dramas I am watching.

Personally, I will continue to watch this, tho it’s not on the top priority list of my drama’s these few months. I want to know where the story goes and how it gets there and hopefully I will get out of my confused state.

Ps I love the music in it =)

    • Hi Domi, I’m so glad you delurked to comment and share your thoughts on Romance Town. I suppose Romance Town’s plotting is different from most other Kdramas because we don’t really know what to expect in the future episodes. Other than the fact that Gun Woo and Soon Geum are supposed to fall in love (well, they did already), that they’ll be caught in a square relationship with Young Hee and Da Kyum while other people are going to slowly find out about Soon Geum’s lottery, and the developing romance between Hwang Yong and the two Joo ladies, and that something might happen to Granny, there’s actually not that much going on. Which may be why the drama’s confusing, because it also continues to add new plot lines in the newer episodes, making the whole plot become this intricate, complicated web of details.

There’s just not a lot at stake in this drama, nothing else that could drastically alter and shake a character’s world. Of course, it could be argued that the lottery winnings is a very important plot point that could change the course of the drama, however, I know I care very little about the whole lottery shenanigans. I watch Romance Town because the characters are fascinating — though that fascination is slowly wearing thin — and for the cuteness between our four leads.

It’s certainly different from a drama like 49 Days, where we knew the entire drama was centered on the 49 days in which Shin Ji Hyun had to get three tears. With Romance Town, we get none of that. Despite that, it’s interesting that we still want to continue watching it, even if everything about the drama is mediocre at best. I guess that says a lot about the way the characters are portrayed, or about how patient we are when it comes to watching Kdramas.

  3. Why did you check out Romance Town?
I vowed to watch all the May dramas, & Romance Town just happened to be one of ’em.

What are your current feelings about it?
Meh. It started out well, but has started going downhill for me so….I might drop it.

….That’s the choice I picked, but I’m on board again after episodes 9 & 10. So no drop for me!

Which OTP (one true pairing) are you rooting for?
Gun Woo and Young Hee. Bromances ftw!

If I had to be nitpicky, the one thing that bothers me the most is
The writing. The plot is going nowhere! *bangs head on desk*

    …But again, since episodes 9 & 10, it’s looking up again.

When I’m not watching Romance Town
    Nothing changes.

My favorite aspect about Romance Town is
    The directing. It’s so pretttaaaayyyy!

Should there be more posts related to Romance Town in the last few weeks ahead?
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yesssssshhhhh!!! I need more crack in my life!

Woohoo! I love polls! Thanks, Dodo!

    • YAYAYAYAYYYYY!!!! Hi Blue! Thanks for the comment & for voting! I’m so glad the drama started picking up, and that it’s improving by the episodes. I too was drumming my fingers to see if the plot was going to move along, and was starting to have my doubts at the end of episode 7. Luckily, episode 8 was where things really started rolling, which made me a really happy dodo. There’s still ten episodes left, but based on episodes 8-10, I’m definitely going to be on board with the rest of Romance Towners! Woohoo!

  4. Heyy Dodo 😀

Why did you check out Romance Town?
Jung Kyeo Woon, Jung Kyeo Woon, Jung Kyeo Woon! What more can I say? He’s MIIIIINNN–Whoops, I meant um, I watched it for him.

The first drama I watched with him in it was Hateful But Once Again. I didn’t like the drama, but he himself gave me a good impression. Then, I watched Loving You A Thousand Times. I liked him there. I don’t know what it was and I don’t know how to put it, but..he really pulled me in..lol. I actually started to watch Blissful Woman too. Then, there was Dr. Champ and boy..I’ll never forget that body LOL. I started to watch Sign for him, but then I couldn’t continue watching that drama >.< So now here I am, watching Romance Town for him! Hehe 🙂

What are your current feelings about it?
I like it. It's fluffy and I like fluffy and cute things!

Honestly, I really didn’t know which answer to pick for this question. There were times when I felt bored, there were times when I felt happy & excited, and yet there were times when I felt nothing..so I don’t really know how I feel lol. I think what I’m trying to say is that I am thoroughly confused lol. I was going to choose this answer: Meh. It started out well, but has started going downhill for me so….I might drop it. But..I know for a fact that I don’t want to drop it, it must be the JGW factor LOL. So I went through the choices again and gave it some more thought. I ended up choosing this answer since I really did like it because of the cute and fluffy romance. And the drama isn’t up to the point where it’s unbearable enough for me to drop it.

Which OTP (one true pairing) are you rooting for?
Gun Woo and Soon Geum. They should start making babies.

This is the OTP I’m rooting for, but sometimes I really feel unsure lol. I don’t know what it is..maybe it’s because there are times when I wonder why she likes him so much, not to say that they’re not cute together. Perhaps, it’s because I don’t see Gun Woo reciprocating his feelings as much. So hopefully, in the future episodes, he will do so and I can be more certain as to why I’m rooting for this pairing lol.

When I'm not watching Romance Town,
I wait to relive the episode through recaps.

I actually wait for Kaedejun’s recaps on Dramabeans. It wasn’t until recently (episode 7? 8?) that I started to look up for more updates and spoilers.

If I had to be nitpicky, the one thing that bothers me the most is
The writing. The plot is going nowhere! *bangs head on desk*

Yeah, I think the writing is my biggest problem with this drama. Just as you had it in the answer, there were many times when I felt that “the plot is going nowhere” lol. I’m going to continue watching until the end, but as of now, I really don’t have an idea of what I’m going to get out of this drama or how I will feel at the end of this ride.

My favorite aspect about Romance Town is
    The romance. Duh.

I really liked the parts where Soon Geum showed her affection to Gun Woo. It was really sweet and I loved every minute of it!

Should there be more posts related to Romance Town in the last few weeks ahead?
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yesssssshhhhh!!! I need more crack in my life!

Yesssss, please! I think I’m getting used to checking various sites for news, updates and spoilers hehe. And I have to mention, I do it even more often after Thursday episodes..the way they always end those episodes omgg lol..the wait until next week is always a killer!

    • Haha I’m sorry that some of my answer choices sucked! But oh my goodness, I feel ashamed that you’ve watched Jung Kyeo Woon in more dramas than I have. Of course, that will all change come summer, but I seriously need to watch more of him in his other works.

The writing is looking to be the Achilles Heel of the drama, so to speak. The writing was also a major source of problem for those who watched Pasta, so it comes as no surprise to me that the writing is proving to be a big frustration for a lot of viewers. That said, I’ll try to continue with more Romance Town-related posts, then! ^_^

      • Thank you in advance for more RT posts, Dodo! 🙂
Your answer choices did not suck at all so don’t be sorry! It’s just that I was in a very confused state of mind (regarding my thoughts on RT as well as my lab report)..heh XD. Yeah, the writing seems really weak..and frustrating at some point. Major problem, indeed! And yes, you should definitely watch more of his dramas! You only have like 5 more days until summer so you can marathon his dramas for as long as you want! 😀 Remember to let me know what you think of them as you watch because I’m really curious now hehe 🙂

  5. Hi endodo! I’m one of your newer readers, though I’ve been coming around since your recaps of Fierce Wife (what a great drama!). Just wanted to say how much I enjoy your blog and have especially enjoyed your previews, spoilers and whatever you’ve got for Romance Town. It’s not my crack, though it could be, but I do hover around your site and a couple others looking for the latest news.

    • Woot, a Fierce Wife fan? How awesome! Thanks for delurking to comment, floralnori, and for telling me that you like this blog. I really appreciate it! Hope to see you delurk more often in the future. I’d love to hear your thoughts on other dramas, as well. That is, if I start writing more posts about other dramas. Lol.

  6. Why did you check out Romance Town?
Well, I picked the Jung Kyeo Woon option but actually I also wanted to check it out for Sung Yuri, Kim Min Joon and Min Hyo Rin (whom I liked in Triple) as well.
What are your current feelings about it?
I like it. It’s fluffy and I like fluffy and cute things!
Which OTP (one true pairing) are you rooting for?
    Gun Woo and Soon Geum.
When I’m not watching Romance Town, I’m constantly checking for updates and spoilers on forums and blogs.
If I had to be nitpicky, the one thing that bothers me the most is The writing. The plot is going nowhere! *bangs head on desk*.
My favorite aspect about Romance Town is The characters that make me laugh and squeal with glee.
They are the sole reason why I’m still watching this. If I didn’t find them all so fascinating, I probably would have dropped this a few episodes ago. I want to learn more about the side characters backgrounds and hear more of their personal stories. I want to know how they became the people they are today and how they got there. What other dirty little secrets are they hiding.
Should there be more posts related to Romance Town in the last few weeks ahead?
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yesssssshhhhh!!! I need more crack in my life!
Romance Town needs some love too!

    • Oooh, I totally agree about wanting to learn more about the side characters and their backgrounds. But I’ve been wanting to know that since day one, so… I’m really hoping more gets revealed soon. However, we only have ten episodes left, so unless the writer starts revealing secrets left and right, I’m not sure if we’ll be able to cover everything that’s needs to be covered in the drama. Haha alright, alright. More Romance Town posts are a’coming!

  7. Actually, unlike most people, I don’t hate the writing in Romance Town. It’s a little slow, yes, and I will admit to occasionally skipping scenes with the other maids that drag on for too long, but overall I like the pace of Soon-geum and Gun-woo’s relationship. I noticed this in Pasta, too; while the writing, plot-wise, leaves some to be desired, I think she nails the characterization. I love how real-feeling all of the characters are, and I love how real their conflicts feel (within the context of the drama, anyway). For example, I’m just eating up the storyline in episodes 9-10 in regard to Gun-woo, and I’m so glad that the writer is dealing with it as a major issue, because it is a major issue, especially in such a society as Korea is. Not being able to provide for and take care of the girl you love is emasculating in any culture, but in one that is still so patriarchal like Korea, it would be doubly so — not to mention that Soon-geum is technically his maid, or at least his household’s maid. It would be ridiculous if this wasn’t a conflict, and I’m glad that the writer isn’t glossing over it.

At the same time, it’s so interesting how she’s developing Soon-geum’s reaction to the whole situation. Her attitude of “so what, I’ll take care of him, then” is completely understandable in light of the fact that her father’s a bum who’s always mooching off of her. Somebody in that situation would likely respond in one of two ways: 1) become totally instant that she find a guy who will take care of her or 2) expect to take care of the guy if he can’t take care of her. Maybe that’s simplistic, but it is a drama, after all.

I’m not sure what’s keeping this drama from being 100% crack, but there’s something holding back from leaping off that ledge. Maybe things will pick up in the coming episodes and I’ll be hooked. Oooh, that’ll be fun — it’ll be my own personal little face-off between Jung Kyeo-woon and Lee Minho every Wednesday and Thursday! kkk

    • Omo, estel! What a wonderful, brilliant post! Loved every word you said. I think this drama is just shy from being 100% perfect because they’re still characters that we can’t connect with sometimes. Whereas in some of my favorite dramas, I’m constantly empathizing with the leads, in Romance Town, there are times when I don’t like them, when I wish they would grow up, or when I just love them to death and need more scenes with them.

Watching Romance Town is akin to riding a roller coaster — there are ups and downs, but there’s also moments where nothing happens except you’re cruising along, waiting for either an incline or decline in the ride.

  8. My answers:

Why did you check out Romance Town?
None of the above. These answer choices suck, Dodo! Gimme another! 😉

What are your current feelings about it?
It’s almost a perfect match made in heaven, but is just a hair shy from becoming my drama crack.

Which OTP (one true pairing) are you rooting for?
Gun Woo and Young Hee. Bromances ftw!
Okay, I was thisclose to voting for Gun Woo and Soon Geum but I’ve only seen up to episode 8 and the whole Gun-Woo-likes-Shi-Ah bugs me, so bromance it is.

When I’m not watching Romance Town
    I’m less stressed and happier!
Despite its flaws, RT is my favorite k-romcom of May.

If I had to be nitpicky, the one thing that bothers me the most is
The men in this drama! They’re all jerks that need some spankin’!

My favorite aspect about Romance Town is
    The directing. It’s so pretttaaaayyyy!

Should there be more posts related to Romance Town in the last few weeks ahead?
Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yesssssshhhhh!!! I need more crack in my life!

    Caption time!
Young Hee: Dude, are you working out with invisible dumbells, AGAIN?
Gun Woo: Hyung, don’t judge me.

    • Oh doozy dear, I heart you. I was ROFL’ing at your caption for several minutes! XD Where’ve you been, girl? We need to talk more. And soon! ❤
